What is sensitive skin?
Sensitive skin describes a skin type that reacts to irritants, allergies or even autoimmune diseases. This skin type is more prone to inflammation, but the symptoms of inflammation may differ from person to person, often manifesting as various reactions including itching, redness, burning and dryness or even acne, rosacea or contact dermatitis (a type of red, itchy rash).
Discover some of the common triggers that can irritate sensitive skin, and how to best care for your skin the Wild Leaves way.
Some typical characteristics of Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin presents in a wide variety of ways such as:
Subjective symptoms: stinging, itching, redness, dryness, sunburns - with or without an accompanying rash.
Visible symptoms: scaling, peeling, bumps, hives, eczema, patches of redness, rashes
What can we do about it?
Treating sensitive skin typically involves finding and eliminating triggers, using gentle home remedies to treat the symptoms, diet alterations and finding supportive products for your skin’s needs.
- HOW TO CARE FOR NORMAL SKIN
1. Identify your triggers & symptoms
You can test out products by doing a “patch test” by simply putting a dab on the skin of your hand or arm to see if and how it reacts. Allergy tests are also a good idea. And, of course, understanding skincare labels is key!
3. Using the proper care
Knowing the causes of your unique sensitivities will help determine what your skincare needs are. As we know, the skin serves as a protective interface and barrier between our inner world and external environment. We need to protect that barrier inside and out! Our gentle face cleanser doesn’t strip the skin’s layers and is a good foundation for hydration. We can recommend using the algae serum and Adaptogen Drinks to soothe inflammatory responses.
2. Go easy on your skin
Harsh or abrasive materials and ingredients should be avoided. It’s best to forego physical exfoliators and potentially irritating ingredients such as drying alcohols and surfactants. Also, remember to pat rather than towel your skin dry.

4. Autoimmune or environmental causes
Sensitive skin triggered by contact to environmental irritants (including products) should be treated differently than sensitive skin triggered by an autoimmune response. If you feel like you’ve tried everything and nothing is working – knowing the causes helps empower you to take the right action rather than having your quality of life suffer.
