HELLO ADAPTOGENS!

While mushrooms have been revered for their healing qualities for ages, they have got a bad rap in modern times.

Adaptogens are leading the trend of putting mushrooms back onto the map for the health powerhouses that they are.

Get to know our Adaptogen Chai and Adaptogen Gold drinks with Lion's Mane, Tremella, and Reishi.

adap - to - gen      pronounced \ ə-ˈdap-tə-jən \

Definition of adaptogen according to the Merriem-Webster dictionary:

a nontoxic substance and especially a plant extract that is held to increase the body's ability to resist the damaging effects of stress and promote or restore normal physiological functioning.

Adaptogens or adaptogenic substances are basically herbs or mushrooms that restore the cells back to their natural healthy state and have qualities that stave off cell stress.

They do not only target a certain type of cell (broad targeting) making them useful in holistic practices, including in herbal medicine for the purpose of stabilizing physiological processes and promoting homeostasis.

WILD LEAVES &
ADAPTOGENS

The fact that chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are the root of many modern illnesses, including heart disease, cancer and autoimmune disorders is no longer a secret.

Yet natural remedies and lifestyle changes that can help reduce these conditions are still not very well-known or practiced in our modern, busy lifestyles.

Mushrooms have been used as food sources since ancient times and as treatment of diseases in traditional medicine. Numerous mushrooms - including adaptogens - have significant bioactive compounds that can exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects.

To help stave off stress on our cells and bodies at large, a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle includes a balanced diet. A balanced diet includes antioxidants. That's right, you guessed it: mushrooms have antioxidants, too! And very special ones at that. Two of them, ergothioneine and glutathione are very powerful and mushrooms are the highest dietary source of them.

WHAT IS A MUSHROOM?
ARE MUSHROOMS A PLANT?

Many people believe that mushrooms are plants, but that’s not the case.

The scientific study of fungi is known as mycology and is its own separate branch of biology.

Mushrooms fall into a few broad categories: culinary mushrooms, poisonous mushrooms and psychedelics. Fungi, however, have a long history of medicinal uses as well, creating a fourth category of medicinal mushrooms that can no longer be overlooked.

While we haven’t fully got there yet, there are many signs pointing to mushrooms becoming a huge staple to the future of medicine, health and well-being - a fact of which ancient cultures were already aware.

ANCIENT WISDOM & MODERN LIFE

Mushrooms have been revered for their healing properties as well as their culinary delights throughout the ages.

Ancient cultures, stretching back for centuries, have known about the nutritive and medicinal properties of mushrooms, to the point of worshipping them.

From the times of Egyptian pharaohs and ancient Chinese medicine practitioners, fungi have been used as an effective therapy. Birch ploypore (Piptoporus betulinus) was found on Ötzi the Iceman – the oldest natural mummy of a man who lived sometime between 3350 and 3105 BC. He kept it on him as he was traversing rough landscapes, most likely because of its an anti-parasitic, antiviral, and antibacterial, properties; it can also be turned into a pasted to help bandage wounds.

In ancient India, Soma is the illusive and still unidentified plant medicine which is mentioned throughout the Rig Veda - the oldest of the sacred books of Hinduism - used as a fundamental offering of the Vedic sacrifice and ceremonies. It's meant to be a mind-altering drink consumed by shamans to enter a transcendental state. More recently, a theory by Terrence McKenna known as the "Stoned Ape Hypothesis" suggests that monkey evolved into humans because of the ingestion of certain mushrooms. It's interesting to note that mushrooms have been revered by many a culture not only for sustenance, but also spiritual and medicinal purposes as well.

Fortunately for us, mushrooms are having another moment! While travelling in India some years ago, Erin (the founder and CEO) discovered these healthy pals . The Adaptogen Chai is the culmination of Erin's fascination of adaptogen mushrooms and love for Indian masala chai. The Adaptogen Gold is the Wild Leaves spin on golden milk with adaptogen mushrooms, turmeric, and other herbs known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
